Diplomatic Visits
The 22nd January Minister of Defence Andre Flahaut visited the rehabilitation work done by the Belgian army in cooperation with our reconstruction program, along the South coast of Sri Lanka. A contingent counting 70 Belgian soldiers organized a major clearing operation and is now focussing on the construction of several camps and shelters.

With the visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs Karel De Gucht planned the 10th February, the Belgian government shows his fullest interest and support for a long term and durable project. The options will be discussed to rebuild an entire street in Pelena. All the 82 houses in this street are damaged, but most of the structures still exist. An earlier idea was to allocate plots for new houses, but unfortunately this has to wait, as the local authorities haven't made up their minds yet. For this reason we will start with repair work of houses located more than 100m away from the shore. These people need immediate solutions!

In the near future more diplomatic missions from Belgian Ministers are considered, in order to follow up the current operations.
