A new 28 feet boat handed over to its happy owner!

Friday, 5th August 2005, after more than 5 weeks of work, a new 28 feet boat was handed over to its owner.

Indeed, in the starting period, the SLRT's activity was focused on boat and engines repairs. During this first phase from the beginning of January till the end of June 2005, in collaboration with the Belgian army, we repaired 163 boats and 315 engines (see table). After this achievement we took up the construction of 28 feet boats for which 5 beneficiaries already have been identified. These 28 feet boats accommodate 4 to 5 sailors and allow, thanks to their size and their speed, to go out in the sea for one day to catch big fish like tuna. It takes 6 workers to complete one boat within at least a period of 5 weeks.

E.P. Samantha is the happy owner of the first 28 feet boat, just finished by the SLRT, and handed over through an official ceremony conducted Mr. Koenraad Pringiers, one of the Trustees, Mr. Lakshman Rasaputram, General Manager of the SLRT and Mr. Chandana Pemadasa, co-responsible of the fisheries rehabilitation projects for the SLRT. This new boat will assure the income for his family, his wife, his 2 children, 1 and 7 years old, and his parents-in-law who are living under the same roof. Together with 4 sailors who will be working with him, about 30 persons will be able to provide their own livelihood, thanks to this boat, and recover their previous life, substituting the 5,000 Rupees given by the Government. 7 Months after the disaster the sailors can prepare the boat to return to the sea...

Un nouveau bateau de 9m de long remis à son heureux propriétaire!

Vendredi 5 août 2005, après plus de 5 semaines de travail, un nouveau bateau de 28 pieds, soit environ 9m de long, a été remis à son propriétaire.

En effet, dans un premier temps, le SLRT a concentré son activité sur la réparation des bateaux et des moteurs. Cette première phase, réalisée avec le soutien de l'armée Belge nous a permis de réparer un total de 163 bateaux et de 315 moteurs sur la période allant de janvier à fin juin (voir tableau). Une fois ces réparations terminées, notre activité s'est depuis centrée sur la construction de nouveaux bateaux de 28 pieds, dont au moins 5 bénéficiaires ont d'ores et déjà été identifiés. Ces bateaux de 28 pieds accueillent entre 4 et 5 marins et permettent, grâce à leur taille et à leur vitesse, de partir pour une journée complète en mer, pêcher de gros poissons tels que des thons. 6 Ouvriers travaillent sur la construction d'un bateau. 5 Semaines minimum sont nécessaires pour construire en totalité un tel bateau.

E. P. Samantha est l'heureux propriétaire du premier bateau de 28 pieds que le SLRT vient de terminer et de lui remettre lors de la cérémonie officielle à laquelle M Koenraad Pringiers, co-fondateur du SLRT, ainsi que M Lakshman Rasaputram, General Manager du SLRT et M Chandana Pemadasa, co-responsable de l'activité de la pêche pour le SLRP, ont participé. Ce nouveau bateau va lui permettre de retrouver ses moyens d'existence pour faire vivre sa famille, sa femme, ses deux enfants âgés de 7 et 1 ans, ainsi que les parents de sa femme qui vivent avec eux. 4 Marins constituant son équipage, ce sont au total 30 personnes qui vont pouvoir vivre de ce bateau, et retrouver leur vie antérieure, substituant aux 5,000 Roupies alloués par le Gouvernement leurs propres moyens d'existence. Le temps de terminer la préparation du bateau et les marins pourront enfin retrouver la mer, 7 mois après la catastrophe.
