Opening hair salon Pelena South

Together with his 2 sons Ranjith was running his own hair salon in the front room of his house for the last 20 years. He is the only hairdresser in Pelena South and North serving the 1,000 families living in that area. Unfortunately the tsunami washed house, salon, equipment and job away on 26th December 2004.

Since one week discussions are going on with Loadstar to rebuild his place or to provide a new location as the demolished salon is situated within the 100m zone, which should be kept free of constructions. Only with a special permission from the local authorities building in that area can be approved. To avoid this administrative procedure, which can take up to 3 or 4 weeks Ranjith proposed to move the salon to a more elevated location. With the help of Loadstar a room of 15x10 feet in house of one of his sons was converted into a salon.

Loadstar plastered, painted and arranged the room and donated a basic equipment. On 16th February the first customers were welcomed. A haircut in Ranjith.s salon costs 40 Rupees (0.40 USD) and if you want to shave you beard as well he charges 60 Rupees (0.60 USD).

Initiatives from this kind encourage the social development of the community as it enables the people to get back to work and to return to normal life.
